About the TMJ/TMD

The Temporomandibular Joint, more commonly referred to as the jaw joint, assists in the opening and closing movements of the jaw. Unfortunately, this joint is a common area for recurring pain.

While many believe that a “popping” sound in the jaw indicates a TMJ dysfunction, this is not always true. The jaw often functions correctly, even if a “popping” sound is present when chewing or talking.

However, jaw popping may indicate a possible TMJ problem, so it’s important to see your orthodontist Dr. Tilghman for an exam if you experience jaw popping.

TMD Symptoms

Common TMD symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Pain while chewing
  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth (locked joint)
  • Facial ache or pain
  • Pain around the ear area
  • Headache
  • Muscle spasms
  • Clicking of the jaw

TMD Treatment

At Tilghman Orthodontics, we offer a TMJ exam that evaluates the joint tissue in the “hinge” of the jaw.

Possible problems include swelling, deterioration of the joint tissue, or damaged joint tissue, which cushions the jaw bones during the opening and closing movement of the mouth.

Treatment options will vary depending on the severity of the TMJ/TMD symptoms. After a thorough examination, your doctor will determine your best treatment option.

Effective treatments may include:

  • Practicing certain exercises with your jaw
  • Practicing stress management techniques
  • Eating a special diet
  • Using a splint or night guard to promote muscle relaxation
  • Applying hot and cold compresses for TMJ pain relief
  • Bite correction surgery
  • Massage Surgery
